New York Giants: Grading each offensive position – Spring 2019
Wide Receivers
The wide receiver corps brings a good balance of youth and veteran leadership. Though most may not want to agree with this, the drop off from Golden Tate to Odell Beckham isn’t as big as it initially appears.
OBJ was by far the most electric receiver the G-Men have had in years and maybe ever. He brought great speed and agility. Unfortunately, it was a constant battle to keep Beckham healthy and build chemistry with the entire offensive unit.
The New York Giants will feature a very consistent group with Sterling Shepard and Tate leading the way. Their respective route running skills should compliment each other very well, allowing for Big Blue tight end Even Engram to stretch the middle of the field with his speed.
Beyond the starters, the remaining receivers on the roster were unimpressive last season. The quartet of Bennie Fowler, Corey Coleman, Cody Latimer, and Russell Shepard combined for 42 receptions. If there is a weakness in this group, it’s in three and four wide receiver sets.
Coleman will make the team because he is a weapon on Kickoff returns. The remainder of the group will be challenged by some promising rookies. Darius Slayton and his 4.39 40-yard dash was selected in the fifth round and will be able to draw coverage deep downfield. Undrafted free agent Reggie White Jr. from Monmouth University has the size and hands to be a good NFL receiver but will need time to develop.
Overall this group has plenty of promise. I believe that they will deliver once they get the ball in their hands. The big question as always will be how often can they actually get the ball and will the quarterback deliver them the ball to them in space, or constantly put them in danger.
Position Grade: B-
