The short managerial tenure of Mickey Callaway could be abruptly coming to an end with the New York Mets.

The Major League Baseball season may only be a few months old but already there is chatter amongst clubs ready to make changes to their management. The New York Mets who are beginning to sputter as we approach Memorial Day weekend are losing games and patience with second-year manager Mickey Callaway.

Callaway’s Mets started off the season respectably garnering optimism for the win-hungry fan base that has remained loyal through many lean seasons. As of late, the Amazins have struggled with consistent play on both offense and defense dropping games to mediocre opponents most notably the Miami Marlins. The team’s discipline has also been questioned lately and many red flags were raised after a bogus baserunning blunder from recent acquisition Robinson Cano went without repercussions.

The infamous play took place this past Friday night as Cano didn’t run hard out of the batter’s box to break up a double play because he allegedly thought there were two outs. The situation looked like a lack of hustle from the former All-Star second baseman and attracted plenty of heat from fans and critics in baseball. Cano who is still repairing his image from last season’s suspension for illegal substances blamed the scoreboard at Marlins Park for the blunder as it incorrectly showed two outs.

Many negative responses were attached to Callaway for not visibly confronting Cano on the matter. The former Cleveland Indians bench coach addressed the media before starting Cano the next game seemingly just sweeping it under the rug.

"“I really feel that wasn’t an egregious thing on his behalf,” Callaway said. “He literally thought there were two outs. He came in and talked about it last night and was proactive in his apology and understands that no matter what the board says we have to be aware of how many outs.”"

The outrage from many Mets fans had led to “Joe Girardi” trending on social media as a possible replacement for Callaway. Girardi most recently managed the New York Yankees for 10 seasons ending in 2017 has been serving as a television commentator for MLB Network.

The former World Series champion spoke candidly about still wanting to manage again during an interview recently with Yahoo Sports.

"“I want to,” Girardi says. “I love it because I love the strategy of the game and trying to put players in the best situation to be successful and instilling confidence in them … and always having their back and building that trust with players. That’s really enjoyable to me.”"

The reaction from New York Mets fans may seem a little extreme considering the team is still hovering around .500, but the years of mediocre play have halted the patience needed for this situation. Callaway appears to be a players coach, but that mentality and lack of wins could cost him his job a lot earlier than expected.
