New York Yankees: Domingo German has become the latest ace
The evolution of Domingo German is on full display for the New York Yankees. A staple of the rotation, his impressive and efficient outings come at the perfect time.
The injury woes of the New York Yankees so far this season have taken every headline regarding the team. The upside from all the injuries has been the development of young talent such as Domingo German, who are getting extra time to play, filling important positions.
One of the most important areas that needed help was starting pitching, following the unexpected injury of ace starter Luis Severino. The Yankees All-Star has yet to touch the field since being placed on the injured list at the beginning of spring training in March. Severino’s absence along with Jordan Montgomery working his way back from Tommy John surgery has given a new opportunity to German.
German started out the year expected to battle for an opportunity as a long reliever out of the bullpen and an occasional spot starter on the pitching staff. The injuries have once again quickly promoted him back into the rotation with minimal expectations.
The 26-year-old from the Dominican Republic was 2-6 last season with a 5.57 ERA, far from stellar. He was used more as a placeholder until another pitcher could be acquired via trade as was the case with J.A. Happ.
This season’s version of German is a complete 180 in effectiveness, he finds himself ahead in most counts and dominating opposing lineups. After his victory over the Orioles on Wednesday night, the right-hander improved his record to 8-1 with an equally impressive 2.50 ERA.
In a recent pregame press conference, Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised German along with other young stars helping to keep the team afloat amongst all the injuries.
"“I think guys that didn’t necessarily expect to be major contributors have asserted themselves in that role, climbed the ladder in our eyes and [become] guys [who] have a chance to have a role for us moving forward, even as we get guys back,’’"
The summer days are quickly approaching and it’s almost a sure lock barring a complete collapse that German will be selected to appear in his first MLB All-Star game. Around the same time frame, Severino and Montgomery are due to return. The rotation could be very crowded by season’s end.
German has made the most of his opportunity to take a regular turn in the New York Yankees rotation. He is one of the reasons Boone’s club has remained in contention for a division title despite the abundance of injuries.
