Missing out on Zion Williamson hurts the Knicks chances to get Irving or Durant.

The plan for the Knicks was always to get Zion Williamson first and then Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant would follow. Now that the Knicks won’t be getting Williamson, there is simply no way the Knicks get either of these superstars if they don’t believe in Barrett.

The Knicks finished the 2018-19 season as the worst team in the league, so why would two superstars want to go to a team without any talent?

The simple answer is they wouldn’t. Irving wanted to be the guy on whatever team he played for, which is why he requested a trade out of Cleveland. He got a chance to be that with the Celtics and wound up losing 4-1 in the second round of the playoffs to Milwaukee this season.

It was a series in which Irving had a fantastic first game, but then pretty much didn’t even show up for the next four games of the series. It would be rather surprising if Irving wound up signing with the Knicks if he feels the won’t be contenders soon.

In this scenario, Irving would be going from what appears to be a bad situation in Boston, to a much worse situation in New York seeing the Knicks don’t have any star players who can single-handedly improve the team.

Personally, I think the only way the Knicks could get a commitment from Irving is if Kevin Durant also says he would sign on as well. However, other than potentially building a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference, what reason does Kevin Durant have to sign with the Knicks?

Durant has two rings and there is a very good chance he gets a third when all is said and done this season. Although Durant’s “legacy” may be questioned because he joined a 73-9 team, he really doesn’t have much left to prove.

Does it make sense for Durant to leave the Warriors if he wants to keep winning championships?

Only time will tell, but chances are, the Knicks will either get both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant to go alongside RJ Barrett, or they will get neither.
