Six weeks into the 2019 season and the New York Mets are at a crossroads. Can they overcome their injury issues to avoid a repeat of recent history?

The New York Mets already appear to be at a crossroads. It’s another year where injuries are starting to take the headlines for a season that is only six weeks old. Last year, there was not enough talent to cover the players and the Mets began a downward spiral they could not swim out. Is history beginning to repeat itself?

Jacob deGrom, the 2018 Cy Young winner, gave Mets fans a scare when he was shut down and placed on the Injured List with pain in his elbow. Relief pitcher Paul Wilson also went on the IL. After Wilson, fellow relievers, Jeurys Familia went down along with Luis Avilan, and Drew Smith is on the 60-day IL. Now left-handed starters Steven Matz and Jason Vargas are missing games, the former with a nerve issue in his throwing arm and the latter with hamstring tightness.

New York Mets fans have to be wondering what is going on? Last year, the training staff was relieved of their duties. Still, the injuries continue to mount. That doesn’t include Jed Lowrie and Yoenis Cespedes into the formula.

Should the Mets page Doctors Curley, Larry, and Moe. It’s hard to find a silver lining in the dark cloud, the way the team at the other end of the number seven train has. Even a dark cloud can bring unwanted rain. The overcast clouds over Petco Field were symbolic of the kind of season the Mets are having so far. They can’t even get sunshine in San Diego.

A M.A.S.H. unit is equipped for handling so many injuries in such a short span. So what is the answer? Well, none, really. Injuries are a common occurrence in any sport no matter how well a player trains and watches his diet.

That’ the reason why the New York Mets signed so many players. Injuries do happen and players who can play multiple positions are very valuable. Jed Lowrie and Jeff McNeil are two players the Amazins can use in multiple positions to avoid what the team went through in 2018.

You can blame Mickey Callaway and Brodie Van Wagenen for this dismal start. But this is Callaway’s second season as manager and BVW’s first season as general manager. Are they responsible for injuries? At least Van Wagenen addressed the lack of depth the Mets had last year.

The Mets are at a crossroad this early in the season and they need to minimize the injuries. It is a long season and other teams will go through what the Mets are going through now. Hopefully, the team can stay close and management can right this ship, so history does not repeat again.
