Earlier this week CC Sabathia became only the 17th player in MLB history to reach the 3,000 strikeout mark. With this, he should have a spot in monument park waiting for him.

When the New York Yankees signed CC Sabathia going into the 2009 season they didn’t know he was going to help them win a World Series and also be one of the most dominant pitchers in the MLB over the next 11 seasons. Additionally, he has been a stabilizing force in the rotation. Sabathia has started at least 27 games in 10 of his 11 seasons in pinstripes.

Those 288 total starts have added up to only 758 earned runs and a 3.73 ERA, to go along with 130 wins and 12 complete games in 11 years. In addition to that, 1,609 of his now 3,002 career strikeouts have been while pitching for the Yankees.

There is no doubt that CC Sabathia has been absolutely fantastic for the New York Yankees and for that reason he deserves a spot in monument park.

22 New York Yankees have seen their number get retired and have a plaque placed in monument park in their honor. Of those 22 Bronx Bombers, only Billy Martin, Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, and Reggie Jackson have ever played for three or more teams over the course of their careers. CC Sabathia would become only the fifth player to ever play for two other teams that are not the Yankees and still have his number retired in pinstripes.

Of those five players, CC Sabathia would be only the second, the other Reggie Jackson, to not win an MVP Award during his time in pinstripes. The closest Sabathia came to winning the award was in 2010 when he finished 13th in voting, Jackson finished in the top-10 three times while playing for the Yankees.

With this in mind, the New York Yankees would be making a couple of firsts, but Sabathia undoubtedly has earned his spot among those 22 greats who have made up for 21 retired numbers by the Yankees. During Sabathia’s time in the Bronx, the Yankees have made the postseason seven times, advanced to the American League Championship Series, three times won the World Series in 2009

In addition to this Sabathia has finished in the top four in Cy Young Voting three times and has been voted into the All-Star Game four times during his time in pinstripes.

CC Sabathia has been a valuable asset for the Yankees since his first start in the Bronx and for that reason, he deserves a plaque in monument park when he hangs the cleats up following the 2019 season.
