Who is the New York City area’s current favorite pro team?
By Ed Stein
New York City area fans love their professional sports teams and their loyalties run deep. But who is the area’s favorite team? Our roundtable panel answers the question.
The New York City area is home to a rich tradition of team sports success. Currently, there are nine professional teams, representing the big four sports. All of them have won at least one title in their history. NYC fans don’t tolerate losing very well. Hey, it’s a tough place, but as the lyric goes, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
While other cities may give themselves nicknames like “Title Town,” or “The City of Champions,” etc., New York fans know the deal. Winners play in and around the Big Apple. Combined, the current area pro teams have produced 53 professional titles, 14 more than the next area, Boston.
The title scoreboard reads as follows:
- Baseball – New York Yankees (27 World Series), New York Mets (2).
- Football – New York Giants (4 NFL, 4 Super Bowl), New York Jets (1 SB).
- Basketball – New York Knicks (2 NBA titles), Brooklyn Nets (2 ABA titles).
- Hockey – New York Rangers (4 Stanley Cups), New York Islanders (4), New Jersey Devils (3).
With so many teams in the area, of course, fans have their favorites. In many cases, it goes by sport. Sometimes a favorite team comes from the love of a certain player such as Mickey Mantle, Odell Beckham Jr., Patrick Ewing, or Wayne Gretzky. Regardless of the reason for their loyalty and devotion, every fan has their ultimate favorite.
This week Empire Writes Back asked our roundtable panelists, “Who is the New York City area’s current favorite team?” With one exception, the panel is in agreement.
