New York Jets: Post Draft/Free Agency Offensive Analysis
The New York Jets have made plenty of great moves this offseason on both sides of the ball this offseason. The Offense which usually lags behind the D is the best it’s looked in years.
Although many consider it to be the weaker portion of the show at MetLife Stadium, the New York Jets have been able to transform their abysmal offense to a formidable force through free agency and the draft. Starting off with the Quarterback position, this is what Gang Green fans can look forward to on opening day, September 8.
Quarterback
Expected Starter: Sam Darnold
This is easily the highest expectations New York Jets fans have had on a young quarterback in decades. Sam Darnold has a chance to go out and really show the league why he deserved to number three overall pick in last years draft. Otherwise, the former USC Trojan will be a big disappointment. The success of this team entirely rides on Darnold’s shoulders, he has to make the big plays he is capable of.
Darnold had a slightly above average rookie season stringing together 2,865 Yards and 17 touchdowns in 13 starts. His scouting report coming out of college was that he couldn’t deal with heavy pressure in the pocket but he was the best pure passer with the highest IQ in his class.
I would argue that this criticism was spot on because when Darnold had time in the pocket, he was absolutely sensational, under pressure, he was clearly uncomfortable. The signal-caller threw 15 interceptions and had a 99 sack percentage index which is right below league average.
Even with his freshman struggles, there are massive expectations for Darnold to perform in 2019, and I believe he will. Much of his successes are going to be attributed to the fact that the offense built around him is designed for Darnold to excel.
