Jack Hughes

All year long, we have heard the common social media hashtag, #TankForHughes. His skating is comparable to that of Connor McDavid and his vision is all-world at only 17. However, there is still some development remaining in his game and frame.

His shot could use some muster and he is 5-10, 170 pounds. Of course, we live in an NHL today where speed and skill out-value size (just look at Mitch Marner and Johnny Gaudreau), but it could be cautionary considering the step he is making.

Even with the work he has left to do in preparation for the NHL, Hughes’ talent is undeniable. He will become a superstar no matter what side of the Hudson he is on. Look for him to become one of the faces of the NHL.

Kaapo Kakko

Kaapo Kakko is much bigger at 6-2, 180 pounds and may even have the argument that he is slightly more NHL ready. I don’t think he has the edges and dynamics that of Hughes, but his hockey IQ is extremely advanced and he has a gorgeous set of hands.

These talking points can muddy the argument for who should go at number one, but the truth is both the Devils and New York Rangers are lucky to get either player. It may even come down to who is just a better fit for the red team.
