Mike Marrano, Empire Writes Back

There is a lot of glaring problems that this New York Mets team has, and they have certainly played a factor as to why they’re not reaching their full potential. The biggest problem for this team is being able to actually pull the trigger on big time players that could fix many of these problems.

The Mets have been struggling with their starting pitching depth and had the opportunity to get two very noticeable upgrades from their current fifth starter, Jason Vargas. Dallas Keuchel, who is still a free agent at this time can be had by any team. He could sign with a rival, which would be a negative consequence for the Mets.

Gio Gonzalez seemed to be an ideal candidate for the Flushing, Queens team, based off of his great numbers at Citi Field. He was not going to be an expensive option and would have been a perfect fit. The closer for last year’s World Champion Boston Red Sox is also unsigned. He could stabilize a sometimes rocky bullpen staff.

In short, they have had multiple options and could not get a deal done.

If more problems arise and it calls for a change, the Mets need to learn to take chances and take care of the issue right away. Ignoring them, they risk having their rivals bulking up for summer and the Mets will be left behind in the N.L East.
