New York Mets concerns one month in – EWB Roundtable
By Ed Stein
The New York Mets are treading water in the NL East with a record of 14-13. We asked this week’s roundtable panel what their biggest concerns were about the Mets.
Almost one month into the 2019 New York Mets season, and it’s been a mixed bag. The highs and lows are about even as evidenced by the team’s 14-13 record. The boys in Pinstripes across town have been getting plenty of headlines due to the amazing string of injuries to key personnel they’ve suffered and the outstanding play by the replacements called up from the minors.
The Amazins have had their share of headlines as well. Pete Alonso is staking an early claim to National League Rookie of the Year with his nine home runs, 24 RBI, and .309 batting average. New closer Edwin Diaz has converted eight of eight save opportunities and has allowed only one earned run in 10.1 innings pitched over 12 relief appearances. Jeff McNeil has played a variety of positions so far this year, but it hasn’t affected his batting average.
There have been low points as well. The two players slated to share the third base job in 2019, Todd Frazier, and Jed Lowrie began this season on the injured list. Frazier is back but Lowrie just played in his first rehabilitation game Sunday in St. Lucie. Last Year’s Cy Young Award winner and New York Mets ace, Jacob deGrom went on the 10-day injured injured list, two weeks into the season with elbow pain.
So there has been both good and bad 27 games into the regular season. Glass half full, the New York Mets are only a game-and-a-half behind Philly in the NL East. Glass half empty, the Amazins are on an 84 win pace, and that won’t cut it.
We asked our panel this week. “What concerns you most about the New York Mets so far this season?”
