Many New York Giants fans were left scratching their heads during the First Round of the 2019 NFL Draft wondering why the team would take Duke Quarterback, Daniel Jones. What people didn’t realize was that this is a win-win situation for the G-Men.

“What were the Giants thinking?”, “These were the worst draft selections in NFL history”. Calm down Giants fans, I think I see what’s really going on here. So, the New York Giants took Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, and fans can’t wrap their heads around the reason why.

General Manager David Gettleman said yesterday that he could see Jones learning as a backup behind Eli Manning for three years just like the Packers did with Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre. However, that still doesn’t answer the question as to why they would take Jones so high in the draft.

Jones wasn’t nearly the highest rated quarterback coming into the draft and many experts called him a second round pick at best. So why on earth, if they were going quarterback, would the New York Giants take such a risk instead of taking a safe pick like Dwayne Haskins or Drew Lock? The answer is two simple words: Trevor Lawrence.

The Clemson QB is highly touted as the best passing prospect to ever come out of high school. Recruiters and scouts had little to no doubts about his production in college and he was able to deliver even on the biggest stage.

During his true Freshman season, Lawrence threw for 3,280 Yards and 30 Touchdowns, against just four Interceptions in 15 games. The fact that this was only his first of three potential college seasons is truly a scary thought to ponder. He is more than likely going to win at least one more National Championship and could win back to back Heisman Awards his final two years.

This kid is good, really good. The Giants have a blueprint to get him if Jones doesn’t pan out. Of course, there’s always the possibility that the Giants newest QB could be everything both the GM and fans hope he’ll be. If it happens that the former Duke Blue Devils signal caller is actually a good fit for New York, it’s an opportunity for Gettleman and company to have a ‘We told you so’ moment.

This scenario kind of reminds me of the situation when Kristaps Porzingis got drafted to the Knicks when there were clearly better options available at the time. Fans hated the pick and then Porzingis was able to put on a show, proving to fans that he was worth the number four overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. The same could happen to Jones and he could be loved by New York fans for years.

Daniel Jones going to get more than enough chances to show his worth over these next three years, as Eli won’t physically be able to play a full season anymore. If Jones shines, then they don’t need to worry about finding their guy but if not, well it’s just all the more reason to tank and go after the real talent two years from now in Lawrence.

Next. Letter to Giants fans, give Daniel Jones a chance. dark

The Giants truly have nothing to lose here and I think that this could be the strategy Dave Gettleman is hiding in his back pocket. Either way, there’s a good chance that regardless of whether or not Daniel Jones can perform, the G-Men have a very good opportunity to be a solid contender within a few years.
