With the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the New York Giants have selected Duke Quarterback, Daniel Jones.

Dear New York Giants fans,

The Giants have selected Daniel Jones, a quarterback out of Duke University. This upset just about every Giants fan, but why? Now I understand if you wanted someone else at six, maybe someone like Dwayne Haskins, Josh Allen, Ed Oliver, Rashan Gary or someone else, but give Jones a chance.

Being a Duke fan, I have seen Jones play quite a bit and I honestly believe he has the potential to be a fantastic quarterback in the NFL. Could the Giants have gotten him with their 17th overall pick? Probably, but if Jones turns out to be good, then why does it matter when he was taken?

Daniel Jones won the Senior Bowl MVP, has a strong arm and he knows how to wait for a play to unfold in front of him in addition to making smart throws. Not only that, but Jones learned under head coach, David Cutcliffe for four years.

Why does that matter you ask? Cutcliffe has taught NFL stars such as Peyton Manning at Tennessee, Eli Manning at Ole Miss among others. Not only that but Eli still goes back to Duke to learn from David Cutcliffe each and every offseason, as did Peyton Manning until he retired.

This being said, Daniel Jones may have some talent many Giants fans have not yet seen. Not only that, but Jones will also have at least a year to learn and become accustomed to the NFL as he will serve as Eli Manning’s backup for at least the 2019 season.

With this in mind, Jones has the potential to elevate his game and become the quarterback Giants fans always wanted to replace Eli.

Remember the last time New York sports fans were this upset about a draft pick? Well if not let me jog your memory, back in 2015 when the New York Knicks selected some kid named Kristaps Porzingis out of Latvia, all hell broke loose.

Knicks fans were visibly upset and Porzingis turned out to be a pretty good player if you ask me. Very similar scenarios, so give Jones some time because he may just surprise you.

He may not be the player you wanted, but he is the player you got and there is no changing that for now. Jones is a great player and there is a reason the Giants picked him at six. Give the kid a shot and you may just be pleasantly surprised.

Sincerely,

Matthew Travis
