The New York Jets struck gold last night when they selected Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams with the third overall pick in the draft.

With the third pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the New York Jets selected Quinnen Williams a defensive tackle out of Alabama. Williams is a great pick for a Jets defense that has struggled the last few years to find any sort of identity. His addition will help shore the defensive line in a big way. Williams has decent size at 6-4 and a solid 289 pounds. Jets Safety Jamal Adams was very happy with the pick.

A Tidal Wave Career

Williams was flat out awesome last season as a sophomore with the Tide. He recorded 71 total tackles with 45 solo tackles. Included with all of that was 19.5 tackles for lost yardage. The eight place finisher in last year’s Heisman Trophy voting will be a force to reckon with come September. That said, he is only 21 years old and is coming from college early. There will surely be some growing pains while he gets accustomed to going up against offensive line units that are sounder and more engaged with their blocks than anything he’s ever seen.

What experts say (bad)

The main thing that keeps popping up when researching  Williams is that some scouts say he’s too small in both the height and weight category. It will be tough for him to keep his weight up and he won’t be able to win the point of attack. He will have a tough time on bull rushing because of his lack of size.

What experts say (good)

Williams is small so he should be able to win the initial point of attack when it comes to getting lower than the other guy. Whether or not he has the size to win the second point of attack is yet to be determined. He has quick acceleration, a high motor and makes quick decisions on where to go almost like he diagnosed the play call.

Williams is a very intriguing pick for the Jets as they try and go in the right direction with their still very young quarterback. Coming from Alabama where he played two years on two National Championship Finals teams will bode well for him. It won’t take long for the “slippery bar of soap” defensive lineman to become acclimated to the league.
