New York Giants: G-Men screwed up more than just the 6th pick

I kept watching because my son is a Patriots fan and of course as the Super Bowl Champions, they picked last. As players came off the board, he was getting happier by the prospect of New England getting a high-end receiver at 32. It’s how I felt when Josh Allen kept getting passed up early in the draft.
Several trades were made at the latter end of the round. Philadelphia moved up to get Dillard at 22. So the best man on the board to protect Manning’s/Jones’ blind side was picked up by their division rivals in Philly. Additionally, Washington traded up to 26 and selected Sweat. The irony here is too much.
Houston surprised everyone at 23 by taking Alabama State tackle Tytus Howard over Taylor. Seattle replaced Frank Clark at defensive end with L.J. Collier who was the best of the rest available at his position. Then we come to the 30th pick and there is a trade. The New York Giants have moved up. With the top defensive ends and outside linebackers are gone, surely they grab the pass protector who has slid down, Taylor.
With the 30th pick in the draft, the New York Giants select Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker. Where did that come from? Baker is a very good corner. He doesn’t get beat deep for touchdowns and would have been a great addition in the second round with the 37th overall pick. So would Byron Murphy or Greedy Williams because CB’s have become an afterthought in this draft.
New York already has one of the best cover corners in football Jenoris Jenkins. On the opposite side, they are thin, however, Gettleman liked Sam Beal enough in last year’s Supplemental Draft to use this year’s third rounder on him. Beal missed all of 2018 with an injury, but he’s supposed to be the real deal. It’s not where the Giants need help. Trading up seven picks from 37, cost Gettlemen an additional fourth and fifth-round selection. That was for a player or equivalent they could have gotten later on.
The first round was a debacle of epic proportions for Dave Gettleman. He made one bad decision after another. Then he came off as acting like he was smarter than everyone else in his presser. Nobody likes smug and they definitely don’t like someone who thinks they are smarter than the world when their decisions are questioned.
Before the draft, Gettleman told everyone that he was going to take the best player on the board when the Giants turn came up. Who in the Blue Hell wrote their draft board? That guy needs to get fired.
I’ve been wrong about Giants draft picks before, especially Phil Simms in 1979 (I wanted OJ Anderson). I really hope I’m wrong here. But to me, this year’s Giants draft wreaks of Dave Brown, Ereck Flowers, and Shaun Williams all rolled into one.
