This year’s NFL draft was set up to be a franchise changing event for the New York Giants. The biggest change was that they blew any chance of contending in the near future.

I’ve been a New York Giants football fan my entire life. My dad was born in 1925, the Giants first year. Dad hated then coach Allie Sherman for trading Sam Huff to Washington in 1964. My brothers and I would laugh at how angry he would get about it decades later until he passed in1999. In all my time supporting Big Blue, I have never been as disappointed in their front office as I am today. He would have been just as disgusted.

Number six

Here we are less than a full day since the 2019 NFL draft began and I still can’t mentally get past that horror show the New York Giants put on last night. After Oakland stunned the world by selecting Clelin Ferrell at four, and Tampa went with linebacker Devin White fifth, the stage was set for the Giants to make a statement. I was as excited as I have been for a draft, in anticipation of a brand new edition of “The Big Blue Wrecking Crew.”

They made a statement all right. With outside linebacker and sack machine, Josh Allen on the board, as well as several blue chip tackles and some athletically freakish defensive ends, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, announced the New York Giants selected Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick. Holy Crap!

In a draft where quarterback prospects dropped like sales of R.Kelly music the last 60 days, Giants GM Dave Gettleman went with the third or fourth-best rated QB. The way things played out, Jones would have been available with their second pick of the first round, 17th overall. Even if he wasn’t there, Big Blue could have gotten Josh Rosen for a steal from Arizona (likely a second or third round pick plus a lower round pick).

On EWB’s twitter page, I said the New York Giants found a way to make Oakland look smart. The most telling tweet came from ESPN’s Max Kellerman:

One last point. In his post-first-round press conference, Gettleman explained why Jones was such a great pickup. Meanwhile, head coach Pat Shurmur looked like someone who just got punched in the stomach by George Foreman in his prime. To paraphrase ESPN’s Mike Greenberg on “Get Up!,” Friday morning. If Jones was such a good choice, why does Gettleman need to explain it to the media?

The draft went on from there because it doesn’t stop for shocking screw ups. The Giants would come up again at 17 for their second pick of the night.
