The New York Giants have made a decision on their quarterback of the future. Big Blue used the sixth overall pick to select Duke quarterback Daniel Jones

When I saw Josh Allen still sitting there at number six, I thought the New York Giants were going to have the steal of the draft. Instead, the team used their top-ten pick on Duke quarterback Daniel Jones despite Josh Allen, Ed Oliver, and Dwayne Haskins all being available.

While it is surprising the New York Giants picked up Jones, it also is not. There were rumors late Thursday about how much the team loved him and ESPN’s draft expert, Mel Kuiper had the G-Men selecting the Blue Devils former signal caller.

"“That’s their guy,” an NFL source told SNY on Wednesday. “They love him and they have for a while. I can’t imagine they’ll wait until 17. He’s not likely to last that long.”"

Jones also has a connection to current quarterback Eli Manning. Both Jones and Manning played under David Cutcliffe. Cutcliffe worked with Manning while he was the head coach at Ole Miss as well as with his brother Peyton as the older brother’s offensive coordinator at Tennessee.

Cutcliffe described Jones as “mentally tough” like Eli and someone who thinks like Peyton. Not so sure about the last part, but he will need to be mentally tough to deal with frustrated New York fans who are tired of losing.

The New York Giants probably could have grabbed their quarterback with the number 17 pick as no other team seemed interested drafting him.  Big Blue could have grabbed a big pass rusher,  similar to their pick last year of running back Saquon Barkley. Addressing an area where the team has severely lacked, while also adding the most talented player on the board.

Jones’ college numbers are nothing to get too excited about as a fan.  While the Duke starting quarterback, Jones threw 52 touchdown passes to 29 interceptions, completing 60 percent of his passes.  Nothing besides the team’s confidence can give fans hope that this is their next franchise quarterback.

Trust in the team’s decision making has been shaky at best after general manager Dave Gettleman’s infamous we didn’t sign Odell to trade Odell statement came back to bite him. The GM also stated that he would be drafting two players that would immediately make an impact.  That seems hard since the team has already committed to Manning playing another season which means Jones will just be sitting his first year.

This makes the move to pass on a defensive stud like Allen that much more puzzling. Allen could have filled the massive voids left by the Oliver Vernon trade and decision to allow Landon Collins to walk away in free agency for no return.

Drafting Jones just seems to be another big mistake in an offseason that was full of mistakes and bad decisions.
