New York Giants selected Daniel Jones QB from Duke with the sixth overall draft pick. At this point, it looks like a poor decision.

With the sixth overall pick, the New York Giants selected Daniel Jones, the floor and ceiling for Daniel Jones is more comparable to Paxton Lynch or Ryan Tannehill. The Giants are hoping they found the next Mitchel Trubisky and the truth of the matter is they probably have not found it here.

Daniel Jones is a product of outstanding coaching and benefited from having one of the best QB coaches in the nation. Though he didn’t have much help in the line with top shelve talent while in college he would hope to benefit from having Saquan Barkley & company.

By the numbers, Jones is 6-5, 221 pounds, with 9 3/4 inch hands, which should help him survive the cold weather and swirling winds in MetLife stadium. At Duke Jones completed 63.8 percent of his throws for 2,836 yards 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

Pros:

Daniel Jones brings good toughness to the position and he showed it time and time again at Duke, starting his career as a walk-on and fighting off several transfer quarterbacks to dig out an opportunity for himself.

  • Does a good Job of working through progressions
  • Above Average when throwing the deep ball
  • Shows good touch to hit on mid levels
  • Strong pocket passer and shows an ability to move
  • Decent Velocity
  • Can throw on the run when pressured into tough situations.

Cons:

Daniel Jones must greatly develop to take the reigns from Eli Manning, the Giants brass must be hoping he’s cut from the same cloth as Manning. Unfortunately, he might be cut from the exact same cloth as Manning minus the pedigree and the overall arm strength Manning entered the league with.

  • Doesn’t have a quick release
  • Multiple passes batted down at the line of scrimmage.
  • Pats the ball when progressing through reads.
  • Shows tendency to fumble when facing pressure.
  • Arm strength was not in top 5 for this draft.
  • A significant drop in accuracy when throwing on the run.
  • Shows too much confidence when running (maybe a half step faster than Eli).
  • Doesn’t show the intelligence to protect himself in a league with bigger faster stronger athletes.
  • Will struggle managing egos in the huddle, played on a college team with no star power.

Overall Grade for 6th Overall Pick

The Giants gave the fans what they wanted in the shape and form of a tall quarterback, however, the New York Giants decided to do things in a manner that I’m sure left most fans licking the roof of their mouth to get that bad taste out of it.

Daniel Jones will have a ton to prove, and a year to learn behind Eli Manning. Hopefully, in that time frame, he comes in and leaves everyone with a warm fuzzy feeling since the Giants just wasted the 6th overall pick on a player they could have had at 17.

The grade for this pick is D+ with potential to make corrections to a C+.

I’m unimpressed with the pick, but even more so disgusted with the waste of value in having two first round picks in a draft filled with top-heavy defense talent in the first two rounds with a major drop off to come.

Next. Playoff’s opening round a mixed bag for Rangers. dark

Each QB aside from Kyler Murray was relatively the same in this draft. Unfortunately, I do believe the Giants were just hoodwinked into believing they had bought real Jewelry from the man on the corner in the city.
