New York Yankees future staff making a strong case for the present
The New York Yankees are surprising the majors with their resilience and depth.
With a patchwork lineup including many players who would normally be in Triple-A, the New York Yankees have kept pace in the American League East. The young players are making a good case to stick around when the vets return from their respective injuries.
New York Yankees may have found a true Gem
Domingo German has shown that he has all the makings of becoming a full-time starter for the New York Yankees going forward. The 26-year-old brings something that the Bronx Bombers have been missing from their starters from the moment that Masato Tanka decided that he didn’t need surgery on his elbow.
He brings filthy breaking stuff and solid off-speed pitches that, in the league today, makes him a rarity. Your modern day MLB pitcher is all about pumping as much heat from the four-seam fastball, that they have forgotten the importance of constant movement.
Though everyone loves seeing a 100 mph fastball when the rest of the league is throwing in the mid-high ’90s, it allows for the batters to start catching the timing of a pitch down. When you have the Yankees go from Luis Severino who throws 98 plus to Chapman who throws 99 to 102 it becomes regular for the opponent who has seen it all game.
When you have a pitcher like German who can still throw in the ’90s but everything he throws comes with movement east and west and every breaking pitch drops south and comes in between 79-83 mph all of a sudden it makes close Aroldis Chapman look as if he is throwing lightning bolts from the mound.
Adding German to the starting rotation should be in the plans for this New York Yankees team and they should not look to sometimes put him in the bullpen or send him back down to the minors just for the sake of having him throw for the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Yankees Triple-A affiliate).
What should Aaron Boone be planning to do…?
The Yankees activated Gary Sanchez from the injured list and will be receiving more reinforcements as the spring months exit and the summer months roll around. With so many young players currently showing the New York Yankees front office, they can continue winning when disasters strike. Brian Cashman should feel a little comforted about the work that he has done so far.
However, with so many players returning to proper health the Yankees should not look to just remove every player or option them back to the minor leagues. Clint Frazier has done everything in his power to prove he deserves this chance to stay. (Update Clint Frazier is heading to the DL 4/25/2019 with an ankle injury)
Domingo German is proving that he would be an excellent addition to the Yankees starting rotation rolling opposite hard-throwing Luis Severino or James Paxton. Gio Urshela is also another name that the Yankees will keep close to their chest because when the trade deadlines come around and other teams are looking for help his name will continue to come up.
Aaron Boone has one-upped all of us by weathering this storm of injuries and guiding his team above .500. He was in a situation where most fans would have been okay with waiting chalking up most of this month with a couple wins until the big bats returned.
With those big name players gone, the Yankees have looked good playing good old style baseball. Moving players into position and batting them, it’s been more than refreshing to watch over the past weeks.
Do we dare talk about this again…?
When does Aaron Boone consider going to a six-man starting rotation with German entering the fray and Luis Severino returning? The Bullpen has not been stellar to start the season, and every starting pitcher could benefit from an extra day of rest?
Boone has been letting his starting staff pitch deeper into games when they’re rolling and seems to trust pitching coach Larry Rothschild more with the timing of visits to the mound and when to pull them from the game.
Adding a sixth man to the starting rotation would ideally benefit the bullpen and the starting pitchers by lifting some of the load from each member of the pitching staff.
Comment in the section below and let me know what you think about the Yankees using a six-man Rotation to save some wear and tear on their pitchers.
