New York Giants draft profile of Rashan Gary
By Ed Stein
Positives
Gary has plenty of upside coming into this draft. At 6-4, 280 pounds, the Wolverine,s alumni is a great athlete for his size. Walter football even described him as a physical freak. His measurables at the combine were on par with other top D-lineman such as Nick Bosa and Quinnen Williams, including a 4.58 40-yard dash and 22 reps of 220 lbs on the bench press.
Almost every scouting report about Rashan Gary mentions his incredible potential and outstanding set of tools he has to work with. His size is a huge advantage. He is very strong and plays well against both the run. His strength is used to both stack up and shed blockers to get the ball.
One of his main strengths that translates well to the next level has to do with his speed and ability to get off at the snap. His first step is explosive according to John Ledyard of The Draft Network. Once he makes that first step, Gary’s speed is what sets him apart from other defensive ends. He is able to quickly close on quarterbacks in the pocket and pursue ball carriers.
Aside from just speed, Gary is able to go from speed to power quickly. Once again the word freak comes up, this time from the Lance Zierlein in his NFL Combine Scouting Report. Zierlein said Gary has a “freaky triangle of height, weight, and speed.”
When I evaluate talent no matter what the sport, there are certain buzz words I look for. Among them are explosive, dynamic, freakish, intelligent (or high IQ) and relentless. Gary checks off more of those boxes than most. In addition, he’s a hard hitter which always plays well with Big Blue Nation.
