New York Giants ideal scenario for opening two days of the draft
By Ed Stein
Day 1 continued
The Giants pick again at 17. In the interim the draft goes as follows:
7th Jacksonville – Montez Sweat
8th Lions – T.J. Hokenson (TE)
9th Hearing that Miami might trade up to get QB Drew Lock, the Broncos move up one spot in a deal with Buffalo and get their QB of the future.
10th Bills – Ed Oliver (DT)
11th Jets – As unlikely as it was when they originally traded down, Rashan Gary is still on the board and the Jets take him. Truth be told if the Jags took Gary and Sweat was on the board, they would still be happy.
12th – Three QB’s are gone and there is only one more first-round signal caller available. Washington is able to swing a deal with Green Bay and they select Daniel Jones from Duke.
13th – Shut out of the quarterback chase, the Dolphins are in a quandary, they really wanted a new face of the offense, but will have to make do with Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2019. Instead, they take Florida tackle, Jawaan Taylor.
14th Atlanta – Bryan Burns (Edge)
15th Green Bay – Devin Bush (LB)
16th Carolina – Clelin Ferrell (DE)
The Giants are back on the clock. By now the phone lines have been buzzing back and forth between New York and Arizona. Josh Rosen, as expected is in play. The Giants are in a bidding war with Miami. Oakland, meanwhile, has decided to stick with Derek Carr for another season and get their next quarterback in the 2020 draft.
Gettleman is no fool and won’t part with this pick, because he knows he can get Rosen cheaper. They select Washington State left tackle Andre Dillard as the final piece of the vastly upgraded offensive line. They do however strike a deal with the Cards. Big Blue sends their second-round pick (37th overall), a fourth-round pick (132), and a fifth-round pick (143) to Arizona for Rosen.
