New York Giants ideal scenario for opening two days of the draft
By Ed Stein
Day 1
This draft begins at 8 pm Thursday night with the Arizona Cardinals on the clock. New coach and offensive mastermind want his hand-picked man calling the signals from “under” center. That’s why they will select 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray from Oklahoma. San Francisco is on the clock.
The 49ers need a game changer period. The best one on the draft board Nick Bosa. The Niners go ahead and select the Ohio State defensive end with the second pick. The New York Jets are on the clock.
Jets GM Mike Mccagnon is caught between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, the Jets need a major playmaker on defense and this draft has a few. On the other, Gang Green has lots of holes to fill and after this pick, they don’t come up again until the third round, so a trade down would be welcome. He’d like it to be with the Giants, but that isn’t happening.
Instead, they find a willing partner in Cincinnati. The Jets send their first round (3rd) and second third-round pick round (93) for the Bengals first (11), a second (42) and a fourth-round pick (110). Cincy gets their new quarterback and it’s Ohio’s favorite son Dwayne Haskins. Oakland is on the clock.
Chucky is a bit miffed, the Raiders really liked Haskins and were ready to pounce. He was sure, the Jets would select a defensive player ahead of him. Now the Raiders are somewhat scrambling. There is still lots of quality on the board. He tells new GM Mike Mayock to select their replacement for Khalil Mack, in former LSU middle linebacker Devin White. Tampa Bay is on the clock.
In this front seven heavy draft, the Bucs have a pretty good front seven. Still, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is 31 years old and has one year left on his contract for $13M in 2019. If they cut him, Tampa recovers the entire amount because that money isn’t guaranteed. There is a ready-made replacement for McCoy in Alabama DT Quinnen Williams and that’s who Tampa selects. The New York Giants are on the clock.
This isn’t the way Gettleman thought the first round would play out, but it isn’t unexpected either. He had intended to take a defensive end, either Montez Sweat (Mississippi State) or Rashan Gary (Michigan). Drafting a quarterback here was never in play anyway, so it’s not a problem. The mild surprise is that Josh Allen is still on the board. The Kentucky linebacker is too good to pass up, so they turn in their draft card to the podium with Allen’s name on it.
