New York Yankees: Bombers suffering now, will contend later
Injuries are piling up for the New York Yankees. If they can get past this rough stretch, they are a contender in the American League.
This 2019 version of the New York Yankees has started off in the unluckiest of ways as they have suffered 12 injuries already in their season that is only 21 games young. Six of those 12 players are expected to be out for more than a month, four of them are out till at least June, and one is expected to be back in August.
- Troy Tulowitzki (April 22)
- Greg Bird (May 15)
- Jacoby Ellsbury (May 28)
- Aaron Hicks (May 3)
- Gary Sanchez (April 21)
- Dellin Betances (May 31)
- Luis Severino (July 1)
- Didi Gregorius (June 15)
- Ben Heller (June 1)
- Miguel Andujar (May 1)
- Giancarlo Stanton (April 22)
- Jordan Montgomery (August 15)
This list can’t get any worse, can it? Aaron Judge better be bubble wrapping himself at all times of the day before and after the game (too late). Tulowitzki is the main concern though because he has only played in more than 90 games twice since leaving the Rockies in 2015. Can he come back and not only stay healthy but produce the way he used to?
His first ten years in the league with the Colorado Rockies spectacular. He finished with a batting average of .299. Since his years with the Rockies, he’s batted .239, .254, and .249 respectfully in his three years with Toronto. He just hasn’t been the same player. The Yankees signed Tulowitzki to only one year deal and are paying him the leagues minimum salary while the Blue Jays are paying the last 20 million of his contract. This is not only a contract year for Tulowitski but also might be a career-ending year if he doesn’t get better.
The Good News
The Yankees are pretty darn good. To have all these injuries and still be hovering around .500 is very impressive. Stanton, Sanchez, and Tulowitzki are expected to be back in the next week or so which will help this team in every department.
They just finished a series sweeping the defending World Champion Red Sox which lead to the team celebrating with a light show in the locker room. The moral of the team is still high, so the Yankees will be fine. They’ll still make the playoffs and will make a push at the pennant.
We can add Aaron Judge to the list of wounded. When does it end?
