With the sixth pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select… Our expert panel will tell you.

For our Sunday Roundtable this week, Empire Writes Back polled our site contributors as well as some guests from other FanSided sites. We want to know who the New York Giants will select with the sixth overall pick on Thursday night in Nashville, Tennessee.

There has been plenty of speculation over who the G-Men will select here. Many think they need to find a successor to 38-year-old quarterback Eli Manning. Others think they need a franchise tackle to protect Manning, his successor, and block for Saquon Barley. The final school of thought which seems most likely is that Big Blue takes someone to bolster their beleaguered defense, who have lost several key members since last season’s trade deadline.

Those are all credible theories because the truth is that the New York Giants have many holes to fill. In 2018, their O-Line was in a sad state. That didn’t help considering their aging quarterback, who wasn’t mobile, to begin with, was sacked a career-high 47 times. Since the offense wasn’t very productive, it put a great strain on the defense. Here are some numbers to take into account.

Offense

  • Total offense – 356.1 yards per game (17th)
  • Rushing yards per game – 103.1 YPG (24th)
  • Scoring – 23.1 points per game (16th)
  • Touchdowns – 23 (21st)
  • Sacks allowed – 47 (10th most)
  • Third down conversions – 36.9 percent (22nd)

Defense

  • Total yards against – 371.4 YPG (21st)
  • Passing yards against – 252.8 YPG (23rd)
  • Plays of 20+ yards against – 61 (31st)
  • Points against – 25.8 PPG (23rd)
  • First downs against – 21.6 FDPG (25th)
  • Third down conversions – 42.2 percent (26th)
  • Fourth down conversions – 82.4 percent (32nd)

The New York Giants need help everywhere. Exempt positions from a dynamic upgrade are running back (Sequon Barkley), tight end (Even Engram), and cover cornerback (Janoris Jenkins). The varied responses of our panelists reflect the team’s personnel woes.

Among those who have been rumored to be picked by the New York Giants at six are quarterbacks Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State), and Daniel Jones (Duke), linebacker Devin White (LSU), and defensive linemen Montez Sweat (Mississippi State), and Rashan Gary (Michigan).
