Round Three – 95th overall pick

At this point in the draft, it’s hard to have much of a consensus due to all the moving pieces involved but there are a few things that stand out. Almost nobody agrees on who the player is or at what position. There is an exception, once again Michigan cornerback David Long got two hits.

Long will be challenged against big physical receivers. He’s not the fastest or strongest player but could be a solid pickup and jump right into a nickel role. In the modern NFL, a team can’t have too many good corners.

Terry McLauren’s name came up again. If the Buckeyes receiver falls to 95th, he might be the steal of the draft. As with any player at this point, McLaurin has some improvements to make in his game. Most important is catching the ball more with extended hands, rather than letting the ball come to his body. With 4.35, 40-yard dash speed and outstanding quickness, he can lose defenders in a hurry once he has the ball.

There are two defensive players that were selected, who have the potential to be very good NFL players with a little development. First is Alabama inside linebacker Mack Wilson. The former Crimson Tide standout has the size and athletic ability to succeed, but his lack of experience (17 NCAA starts) works against him. The other player is Maryland safety, Darnell Savage. He’s fast (4.35) and smart, but is undersized for an NFL safety at 5-11, 198 pounds.

This draft could pay huge dividends for the New York Giants. They are in a position to pick up a few impact players that will help the team for years to come.
