New York Giants: Three round internet mock draft compilation 2.0
By Ed Stein
Round One – 17th overall pick
This is the pick New York acquired in return for Odell Beckham Jr. from Cleveland. 13 different players were selected in the 21 mock drafts we surveyed.
There is some change here from the last compilation. Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell is the new favorite garnering four hits. Daniel Jones was second with three hits. Three offensive tackles tied for third with two hits each, Cody Ford (Oklahoma), Jonah Williams (Alabama), and Greg Little (Mississippi).
The mock drafters are aware of the New York Giants bad offensive line last season, especially on the left side. Jawaan Taylor and Andre Dillard had one hit each. That means almost one third surveyed thought the Giants should concentrate their efforts here, Only five of nine who opted for a quarterback with the sixth pick, paired a tackle. So much for protecting the investment.
Ferrell was an outstanding pass rusher for last year’s National Champions. He had 20 tackles for loss, out of 55 total tackles including 11.5 sacks. His athleticism is fantastic and he has enough speed to pursue the ball. Ferrell has a few red flags.
Although he’s 6-5, Ferrell only weighs about 265 pounds. That’s a little light for a down lineman, bigger NFL tackles will make things tough for him against the run. Additionally, he struggled down the stretch picking up only one sack in his last four games. Those games were against better competition as three of them were playoff games (including ACC Championship Game).
There is support for Jones to come in and learn from Eli Manning. Jones looks like a prototype NFL quarterback and his head coach at Duke, David Cutcliffe, was Manning’s head coach at Ole Miss. It would be like QB grad school for the athletic signal-caller.
Others receiving consideration for the New York Giants second pick of round one are Florida State DE/LB Brian Burns, Mississippi receiver D.K. Metcalf, LSU cornerback Greedy Williams as well as Sweat, and White.
