New York Mets: Ron Darling taking leave of absence for health reasons
Prayers up for New York Mets pitcher turned broadcaster Ron Darling is taking time off to deal with surgery to remove a mass from his chest.
During Saturday night’s New York Mets broadcast, we were provided with a surprise that nobody saw coming, and it is pretty serious.
Broadcaster Ron Darling announced that he will be taking a leave of absence from the booth. He will be having surgery to remove a mass from his chest. According to Ronnie, if all goes well he will be back in the booth some time next month.
According to Anthony DiComo (via Metsmerized Online), SNY analyst Todd Zeile will take on some of Darling’s work in the booth, and we will likely see Keith Hernandez more often alongside Gary Cohen as well.
Darling said he wasn’t feeling well and a visit to the doctor revealed the mass. There has been no mention of whether or not the mass is cancerous.
Ronnie is best remembered for his time with the Mets in the 1980’s into the early 90’s. He won 99 games over his time in Queens with a 3.50 cumulative ERA. He was part of the staff that brought home a World Series title in the magical year of 1986.
He has teamed up with Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez to form the popular SNY Mets TV team.
Good for Ronnie for getting the procedure done quickly. If you leave a mass untouched you are playing with fire. If something happened to him because he didn’t treat it in a timely manner, well that would just be a disaster.
Mets fans, time to get our prayers up for Ron Darling. Surgery like that is never routine. It sounds like he should be fine, but let’s all get behind our guy and hope he comes out of it better than before.
Then we will see him soon after.
