Despite all of the hitting, the New York Mets will live and die by the performance of their pitching staff. Steven  Matz could prove to be a huge key.

The New York Mets sit on top of the NL East with a 9-4 record. Granted, it’s a very long season. But, did you expect to see the Mets on top, at all? I sure as heck didn’t.

With guys like Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil in the lineup, it’s hard to be surprised. The Mets are fifth in batting average with a .263 mark.  They are currently tied for fourth in runs scored.

That’s the way to start as we begin a new era of Mets baseball.

Now we move onto the future.

Yes this team can hit. We have proven that to be blatantly clear.

However, this team is built on pitching. It will determine the fate of this team.

Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz will take this team as far as it is going to go, period.

After an off couple of seasons where Matz posted a record of 7-17, he has rebounded in the early going with a 1.65 ERA after his first three starts.

That’s a great sign because he could be a key to how far this staff goes.

Think about it. First of all, left handed pitchers that throw as hard as Matz aren’t growing on trees.

There were times that Matz was dominant in the years 2015-2016. If he can stay healthy now and find something along those lines again, it adds an element to the Mets staff that hasn’t been there.

Next. Funky lineups translate into Mets success. dark

We all were shocked the other night. Jacob deGrom got shelled. It’s obviously going to happen to every pitcher, but some of us began to think that deGrom would never have it happen.

Two days later, Matz led the Mets to a win.

That’s the sign of a pitching staff that can pick itself up. When one guy has a bad outing, the others pitch well over the next few days to counteract that bad night.

If Matz can be there for the team consistently it will go a long way in helping the Mets to a solid season.
