New York Jets add solid depth with Ty Montgomery
The New York Jets made a very solid signing yesterday. They upgraded at the backup running back position by signing Ty Montgomery.
After a fast-paced opening period of free agency, things had gone quiet for the New York Jets. We hadn’t heard from them in several days now, and it seemed like they were content to stand pat and prepare for the draft.
Until now. We have a move at the running back position:

Clearly the Jets were in the market to step things up at the backup running back position.
Unfortunately for Elijah McGuire and Trenton Cannon, this moves shows how the team feels about them at this point.
In this case, I have to agree with Mike Maccagnan on this. He made one heck of a signing here.
He made a huge upgrade at backup running back. Sorry, Elijah and Trenton.
First of all, Montgomery is a bit of a mini-Bell. He is a threat catching passes out of the backfield as well as running the football.
The Packers actually listed him as a wide receiver in his first year. Henceforth the #88 on his jersey.
Now, Montgomery has never had a year like Bell, but as a backup he doesn’t have to. He does, however, have a year of 44 catches back in 2016 to go along with an average of 5.9 yards per carry.
This young man can play and he is only 26 years old.
His breakout game came in 2016 against the Chicago Bears in week 15. He scored twice on the ground as part of a 16 carry, 162 yard performance in a 30-27 Packers victory. Montgomery’s second touchdown came a little over halfway through the third quarter, putting the Packers up by ten.
The Bell factor comes into play here too. Montgomery is a good player, but being around Le’Veon Bell isn’t something that occurs every day.
A guy with his ability is going to rub off on Montgomery. He will become a better play because of Bell’s presence.
Very solid move here by the Gang Green.
