The New York Mets scored runs in just about every way imaginable during their mini-series vs the Twins and Pete Alonso was at the forefront of them all.  Alonso once again had a series to remember.

Pete Alonso might truly be in the leader in what appears to be the midst of the tides turning for the New York Mets. In a home series in which the Mets got starts from each of their best pitchers, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard, it was the offense that helped the Mets split the series against the Twins.

In the first game, the Twins helped end deGrom’s quality starts streak, he also gave up his first run of the year. The Mets ended up losing that game despite scoring eight runs. A rally late was not enough, but still, to lose a game on a deGrom start and score eight runs in that same game will likely never happen against.

On Wednesday night, Noah Syndergaard pitched outstanding. He was rolling through seven inning before imploding a little bit in the eight, but he had a 9-1 lead when he left the game. Jeurys Familia and Edwin Diaz did their best efforts to blow the game but the lead was too big and the Twins ran out of time unable to complete the swept.

Moral of the story for the Mets in 2019, it has been all about offense. The Mets score runs, a lot of them too. In this two game set alone they scored 17 runs. And once again, it was Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto who continued swinging their scorching hot bats . However, Alonso just gets the edge in this one.

Sprinkle in a resurged Brandon Nimmo who had a home run, a double, and got hit by a pitch to bring home a run, and this series MVP was tough to choose. Wilson Ramos and Jeff McNeil could have been considered too but Ramos only started one of the games and McNeil just didn’t do enough.

So once again, Pete Alonso takes home MVP of a series.

Note: At the end of every series the Mets play this year, I am going to come here and reward a ‘MVP of the Series.’ It will simply be who I think helped the Mets, win or lose, all things considered. At the end of the year, I will see who has the most ‘MVP awards’ to help crown the ‘best’ Met of 2019.

It has been a rip-roaring start for Pete Alonso’s MLB career and what seemed like was just going to be an encouraging start to year against the Nationals on Opening Day has turned into a historic start for any player ever.

In the two games this series alone, Alonso hit two home runs, both on Tuesday (his first career multi home run game), he had four RBIs, three runs, and two walks. He now leads the team in home runs, RBIs, and doubles. But to get back to the Twins series, his two home runs helped spark a rally on Tuesday and his patience at the plate allowed him to walk in a run on Wednesday.

When I said I all things considered for the MVP of each series, it also mean I included what needs to be talked about, not just outright positive results. Well right now, Pete Alonso needs to be talked about he is special and doing historic things. Between him so far this year, and deGrom all of last year, the Mets are lucky to have this kind of domination and historic talent.

What’s next?

Up next for the Metsies is a weekend series vs the Braves down in Atlanta. They will play four games in four nights with Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler, Jason Vargas, and Jacob deGrom set to start. deGrom’s start Sunday will be on national TV and now will be to see if he can overcome his rare poor outing on Tuesday.

However, the Mets recently called up Corey Oswalt and used Jason Vargas in relief. There is a chance we could see Vargas not get his next start even if there is not an off day.

The Mets play the Braves for four who are also 7-4 going into the series. The Mets will be challenged early and often in these games, but thanks in large part to Pete Alonso the Mets might actually be able to score some runs.

Even if the Mets just don’t get swept/take only two games in the series, I’ll chalk that up as a win. It is likely the Mets will see Kevin Gausman on Thursday in the series Opener, but #PeteIsGood so it might not even matter who they face.

dark. Next. Which Mets players should be given contract extensions next?
