New York Yankees: Yanks have started showing encouraging progress
The New York Yankees, led in most part by the power bats of their young players, were able to sweep the Orioles this weekend in Baltimore.
With the New York Yankees, it was never a matter of it they would start hitting a lot of home runs, more just when they would. We all know everyone was waiting for it to begin, the start hasn’t been perfect, but all at once, the crack of the bat could be heard ringing out in Baltimore. The young Yankees core began lighting it up and dropping bombs all over Camden Yards.
Aaron Judge smashed hit two deep shots. Gary Sanchez now leads the team with six home runs and 9 RBI’s this year. Gleyber Torres is holding steady at three homer runs. And the icing from the weekend was Mr. Clint Frazier who slammed in the go ahead runs while the Yankees were down three to four at one point this past weekend. A three run shot over the left field wall put them ahead and would later be the momentum swinger in the series.
The Yanks have been waiting for the moment to happen. Now, for a brief second, Manager Aaron Boone can breathe easy. They still haven’t mastered putting runners on base consistently but they have gotten better after the first week of the season.
The Yankees are still dealing with an overwhelming amount of injuries, however, when the Yankees seem to loosen the reigns a little bit, the young kids seem to improve. Maybe it’s coming to the point where we need to just let the kids play.
Red Thunder, with lighting quick bat speed
Clint Frazier showed off his bat speed and his strong core this weekend. Making the Orioles pitcher pay for leaving a slider hanging in the zone. With the strength and quick bat through the zone, Frazier reminded the fans why he was such a highly touted prospect before the injuries happened last year.
With Frazier currently having the hot hand, the next big questions facing this Broadway Show is what do they do when they start getting healthy. Frazier is doing everything in his power to make a case to stay in the big leagues and the Yankees should be listening.
Unfortunately, they may not want to let go of some of the original homegrown talent that helped them ease through those tough times. Yet at the same time, it may be time to start looking at the changing of the guard.
With players like Frazier and Domingo German stepping up in the wake of the injuries, the Yankees staff should start looking to make some adjustments to let the hot hands ride it out.
If the current roster keeps showing progress and continues throughout the season, it may become apparent to trade a few players away to clear up the log Jam at certain positions.
What are we waiting for?
The Yankees are at the five win mark and starting their upward climb towards the top of the AL East. This surge of power, of course, was expected for the team that broke the home run record last year. With the addition of more young talent, and another year playing together, the Yankees should start to see major progression.
However, with tougher teams than the Orioles coming up on the schedule, we should start to get a much better idea of what this New York Yankee team is really made. Also, we should start seeing if they have the mental toughness to fight through the early season adversity they are currently facing.
The Yankees, as always, control their destiny and can point this ship in the direction they want to go, it’s up to General Manager Brian Cashman and Boone to make sure it arrives on time to its proper destination.
