With the 142nd pick in the 5th round, Giants select Jalen Jelks, edge

These later rounds are where it matters most, the First Round teams grab immediate talent but the 4th&5th rounds is a true depth building round and it starts the foundation of your team in a young core position. The Giants have three picks in this round and have the opportunity to increase the depth talent and production and can truly show off their scouting departments skills.

Jalen Jelks comes by way of University of Oregon standing in at 6’5 256 lbs, Jelks has the right build to make a solid contribution to Defensive Coordinator Dave Bettcher’s defense standing on the edge blitzing or dropping in to coverage.

Jelks brings with him a solid base benching 19 reps at the combine and running a 4.92 40 yard dash, what was most impressive was his broad jump which gives us an idea of the explosion and first step he has off the line.

Jelks would give the Giants a third young pass rusher and would also give them some much-needed size in that front seven if/when he cracks the rotation.

With the 143 pick in the 5th round The Giants select Saivion Smith Cornerback Alabama

Saivion Smith is another long, rangy corner standing in at 6’1 200 lbs, Smith has all desired size and strength you could want from a corner originally a 5 star recruit that went to LSU, Suffering injury and some off of the field issues. Savion transferred to a Junior College and then to Alabama, Smith brings with him strong press skills and would be a perfect complement on the outside against bigger receivers.

The Giants do well taking a flier on him here hoping he can keep his head on right and bring big contributions to the team, his talent has always been undeniable but trusting his head was in it has always given moments of pause.

With Smith and Beal, Jenkins would then be given the freedom to match up with the oppositions best receiver even if that means Janoris Jenkins has to operate out of the nickel position. Two big corners give the Giants a good starting point on rebuilding the Defensive back depth; which took such a major hit last year.

With the 171st pick the Giants select Olisaemeka Udoh Offensive Tackle

Olisaemeka Udoh had a great season and was able to show even more during the east vs west shrine game as a senior. He his far from polished but at 6’5 323 lbs, Udoh has the potential to be an NFL Guard. He doesn’t posses the foot mobility to be a Tackle on the edge in the NFL, However I do believe he would be an outstanding guard.

The transitions from tackle to guard in college may be difficult but the Giants would have the luxury of letting him sit and watch behind some very good Guards that are currently on their team. With a year or two under his belt and some NFL weight training Udoh could be in line to start on the right side after Kevin Zeitler. If nothing else he would provide good immediate depth and size along the offensive line.
