New York Giants: Why the Giants should trade for Josh Rosen
By Mike Marrano
With the NFL Draft coming up, the New York Giants need to make a trade for Josh Rosen right now to address other needs in the draft.
The New York Giants should trade for Josh Rosen as soon as possible to help make their path to the draft more clear.
Overall, the Giants are faced with a lot of questions going into the NFL Draft this year. After trading three-time pro bowl wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr to the Cleveland Browns, they have more than made it clear they are gearing towards a massive rebuild and in that trade, the Giants acquired many draft picks, including a first rounder, any of the picks they have could help them land Rosen in a trade with the Cards.
Anyway, going into this draft, it should be clear the Giants need to replace Eli Manning to expedite that rebuild, but the answer may not be from a QB in the draft itself, but be in in Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen.
When being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the number 10 overall spot, he seemed to feel a little disrespected when being taken so low compared to other quarterbacks in the class being taken in front of him. Quarterbacks such as Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Josh Allen. Rosen went on to say that nine mistakes were made in front of him and expressed he was upset that he fell to that 10th overall spot in the draft.
In the 2018 Draft Combine, it was emphasized that Rosen’s footwork and mechanics made him an attractive player in that year’s draft. Some of his strengths that were noted were his pass completion rate when being under the blitz, his coordination between his eyes and feet and his ability to trust his protection enough to lose focus on his receivers and not throw the football without complete confidence. He has the foundation to become a successful quarterback but it all relies on the system he is in to develop him into the ideal quarterback he needs to be.
In his first year in Arizona, he was already put to the side by newly signed Sam Bradford. After Bradford’s efforts in Arizona inevitably failed, Rosen was plugged into the new quarterback position.
In his first year, Rosen threw 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on the rest of the year alongside over 2,000 yards thrown and a completion percentage of 55.2%. These numbers do not showcase how good of a quarterback Rosen can be, however. Dealing with multiple offensive coordinators in the season with Mike McCoy being fired and replaced with Byron Leftwich already can put any quarterback at a disadvantage.
Also, it doesn’t help Rosen either when you have no protection or weapons to go with that. His offensive line allowed him to get sacked once every 10 drop backs, making them one of the worst offensive lines in the league. When you are under pressure that consistently, you will be forced to throw the ball hastily. The weapons he has is Larry Fitzgerald being the best option he has alongside unproven assets like Ricky Seals-Jones and Chad Williams.
If the Giants were to take the risk of drafting a guy like Dwayne Haskins or Daniel Jones, they risk trying to adapt to the NFL landscape. Also, if they do not show they are ready to take over in the next year, that could put them at a massive disadvantage.
Rosen would already have an advantage since he has experience being on an NFL team and possesses the raw talent that can be improved upon under the right guidance. We have seen him show glimpses of what he can be in Arizona working with the pieces he has.
If Rosen is moved to New York, he would have some options to work with Saquon Barkley, newly signed WR Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard, and Evan Engram. If the Giants can take this upcoming draft to worry more about bolstering up their offensive line and trade for Rosen, it would speed up the rebuilding process and can truly show what former UCLA star is capable of.
The Cardinals have given up Rosen and it shows with the Hiring of Kliff Kingsbury and his favoring of Kyler Murray in this draft. Rosen was not given a fair chance in Arizona and if he was able to start new in a better environment he would be capable of mimicking his success he had back in college.
