New York Mets: Pete Alonso takes home ‘MVP’ honors for Opening Series
The New York Mets have wrapped up their Opening Series of 2019 and if I had to choose, I would give Pete Alonso MVP honors because of the timelines of his success.
The New York Mets might have fallen short on their comeback attempt against the Nationals on Sunday, but that does not mean we should be blinded by the success of Pete Alonso, amongst others.
Note: For every series the Mets play in this year, I am going to come here and reward a ‘MVP of the Series.’ It will simply be who I think helped the Mets all things considered. At the end of the year, I will see who has the most ‘MVP awards’ to help crown the ‘best’ Met of 2019.
Okay, now that you know what’s going on, I will give my award for opening week to Pete Alonso. Luckily, there were so many Mets players to choose from this weekend, that this was already tough.
Jacob deGrom out pitched Max Scherzer. Jeff McNeil has a four hit game. Robinson Cano sparked them on Opening Day. However, the most impressive player this series was Pete Alonso. During the three games series, Alonso had the most hits, RBIs, doubles, and walks. He also leads the team in average amongst those with more than three at bats.
So, he basically leads the Mets in every major, pure baseball category. However, that alone is not the reason he get this opening MVP honor. Stats alone no not reflect how the Mets did in D.C. Rather, the reason Alonso gets it is because of the timeliness of it all.
Not only did Alonso need to come up and play well enough to prove calling him was the correct move, he needed to do it to help the Mets. Everything about the Mets looks sharp right now, minus some bullpen arms and shaky pitching not named deGrom or Edwin Diaz.
By Alonso coming up and having this solid a series, he does have a three game hit streak now, he also makes the Mets a better team and makes GM Brodie Van Waganen look brilliant. For a young team with a lot of roster turnover, it is important to give an early impression to trust the GM. Alonso’s performance proves that we should trust him.
It is so important for Alonso to have performed like he did. Now, it is unlikely he gets called back down and his production will have a direct impact on the Mets’ wins and losses.
Alonso could not be off to a more perfect start to his MLB career. While much of what the Mets are is still not guaranteed to be anything real just yet, it is encouraging to see the newcomers perform. Imagine the outrage if Alonso hasn’t been as impressive as he was? That would change everything.
Up next for the Mets and their new first baseman a three game tilt against Miami Marlins down in Florida. With the Mets not projected to get to deGrom until the third game of that series, they might need a lot more offense from Alonso once again to stand a chance at winning that series too.
