New York Jets: Center or edge? Fans make their choice
Should the New York Jets make sure they take care of an edge rusher or center, if they can only pick one this off-season? Fans make their pick.
The New York Jets had a lot of work to do this off-season. To say that this roster was barren of talent was an understatement. A 4-12 team always has a lot of holes to fill. There were far too many to fill in one off-season.
To their credit, they have done a good job of adding as much talent as possible. C.J. Mosley and Le’Veon Bell were the two prized signings of the off-season and both came to the Jets. That is saying something about the direction of this team.
But Rome wasn’t built in a day. There is no way that the Jets won’t go into the season with work to be done. This is going to be a two-year process, which leads me to the question of the day.
It is very possible that the Jets won’t be able to find a long-term answer at both center and edge rusher during this off-season.
So, which is more important? If the Jets can only secure one, should they make sure they acquire a top-flight center, or an elite edge rusher?
Well, we decided to ask fans on Facebook. Specifically, we ran a poll to see which position fans would prefer the team take care of this year.
Here is how it turned out:
Interesting results, huh? I thought so.
It’s hard to ignore the point of the majority. We have said for years that the Jets need a dominant force off of the edge. Imagine the defense actually being able to close games.
Being able to get to the quarterback will do a lot to help the Jets seal the deal in the fourth quarter, which has been a problem for them in the past.
For me, I side with the position of the minority on this. It is a huge miss to not find a center during this off-season.
The bulk of the time needs to be spent on making Sam Darnold‘s life as an NFL quarterback easier. Adding a weapon like Le’Veon Bell does a lot to make that life better.
But they need to improve up front and protect him. Kelechi Osemele was a very nice start to the process. But center is huge.
The center is the quarterback of the offensive line. That needs to be done competently and Jonotthan Harrison is a nice backup piece. However, I need more convincing that he is a 16 game starter.
Find that center. My opinion.
