The 2019 New York Mets season is underway while the team should simply be worrying about the next game, I am going to discuss more about the future. Here are some players who should a get contract extension.

The New York Mets are finally playing some regular season baseball again. The talks about what to do in the future will stop and the team will be focusing simply on the next game. However, the Jacob deGrom extension is still a hot topic, and will be a lingering one all season. So, I am going to discuss some players who the Mets should look into extending next, explain why, find a similar MLB comparison, and the urgency to get one done.

The New York Mets no longer have to worry about their ace and keeping him happy, however there is a still a large chunk of the core that will one day become expensive. The Mets, no matter what time of the year cannot be blind to the fact at how much talent they have right now, young and old.

While the payroll might always stay stingy, general manager Brodie Van Waganen has proven he is willing to get creative. That is ultra important with the league wide status quo changing. The talent on the free market is dwindling and teams are working to keep their best talent put. Finding loopholes to arbitration, changing the annual average value high, amongst other ways to keep talent and slap them with a shiny extension.

The Mets, mostly the exception and not the rule, are beginning to adapt to the modern league. Keeping deGrom years before he was set to be a free agent was a smart move and keeps them in par with the league. However, it should not stop there.

Here are some Mets players who might deserve an extension soon, the urgency to get a deal done (on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being really urgent) and a contract similar to one already out there.

Please note, I am not reporting that the team is in talk with any of these players nor am I an expert on going rate and contract terms, I am simply trying to have fun and speculate players who should get an extension, in the simplest form, just my opinion.

With that out-of-the-way, let’s begin. Here are the players who the Mets should consider extending next.
