Of all the New York Mets players poised to put themselves on the map in 2019, it is Brandon Nimmo who might just be the most likable one of them all. Let’s see if he can meet three specific goals this season.

The New York Mets and Brandon Nimmo are both entering 2019 with high expectations, at least both should show some sort of improvement from 2018. Nimmo had a solid season in 2018. He really won over the fan base with his heart and his hustle.

This spring, well he had quite the spring. It started with a shoulder issue that kept him sidelined for the first few days and then his iconic stomach bug issue in which it was thought he gave himself food poisoning.

Thankfully, all of that is behind him. He has actually turned it around this spring and is finally getting into a groove he needs to be getting into with the season just a few days around now. This Spring, Nimmo is batting .286, six runs, two home runs, nine RBIs, and 14 hits. His numbers are about where you would expect them to be for Nimmo where I don’t exactly consider him a power hitter.

However, not all of what happens in Spring Training will correlate to the big leagues. But, in the other extreme of that some of it does. So, what could we expect from Nimmo in 2019 in terms of numbers?

Last season, Nimmo led all Mets qualifiers in OBP. He also led all qualifiers in batting average, was second in runs (in fewer games), and led all qualifiers in doubles. His other qualifiers were Amed Rosario and Michael Conforto, all three of these players will be linked as the “future core” of the Mets, so Nimmo for sure carried his load for the Mets.

However, 2019 is a whole different year. While everyone starts from scratch and gets a new slate of games, I personally don’t see Nimmo’s stats drastically changing. He is a smart hitter and is solid when he gets on base. He is one of the best base runners on the teams and is great at getting on base.

So, with all the roster turnover Nimmo might not be able to be amongst the team leaders in all the small-ball stats again, but he could still be poised for a breakout campaign and really win over Mets fans.
