Round Five: David Long, CB, Michigan

In a draft strategy unlike years past, after choosing Bosa in round one the Jets don’t go back to the defensive side of the ball under here, in round five, with David Long out of Michigan.

Strange, I know. The times are changing in Florham Park, NJ.

The Jets need help at the cornerback position. Trumaine Johnson underachieved last year by a lot. Morris Claiborne is not likely to be back in 2019. Buster Skrine will not be back in 2019. Brian Poole is here but he is not an outside corner.

David Long has the potential to be a corner on the outside, and the potential to be a steal on day three. Long is a guy that can cover.

According to Pro Football Focus, Long allowed nine receptions in 31 targets, and the passer rating against him was 36.9. For perspective, projected first rounder out of LSU, Greedy Williams, had a passer rating of 58.1 against him.

Both are good, one is better.

Long was also ranked number one in cover snaps per reception and yards per cover snap. He was in coverage on 295 snaps, yet only targeted 31 times. That is a guy that quarterbacks stayed away from.

Sound familiar?

Take the risk, this guy could yield a huge reward.
