New York Giants: How the Odell Beckham trade impacts the Giants’ draft
Could the Giants replace OBJ with another SEC wide receiver?
Trading Odell Beckham Jr. creates another hole, this time at wide receiver. With only one notable wide receiver left on the roster in Sterling Shepard, the Giants need to get someone to fill this hole, whether it be this year or next.
That guy could potentially be Draft Combine standout, D.K. Metcalf. Metcalf who was already a highly coveted wide receiver going into the draft, only boosted his stock thanks to his combine performance.
Metcalf ran a 4.33 second 40-yard dash, had 27 reps at the bench press station, jumped a 40.5 inch vertical, 134.0 inch broad jump, 7.38 3-cone drill and a 4.5 second 20-yard shuttle. To put this into perspective here are Odell Beckham jr.’s combine results:
- 4.43 second 40 -yard dash
- 7 bench press reps
- 38.5 vertical jump
- 122.0 inch broad jump
- 6.69 second 3-cone drill
- 3.94 20-yard shuttle
Now this isn’t to say D.K. Metcalf is a better player than Odell Beckham jr., that is not at all what I am saying. All I’m saying is that Metcalf had a fantastic combine performance and with this in mind he could be a serious player to look at should he be available come the 17th overall pick.
Metcalf went for five touchdowns in 2018 to go along with 569 yards and 26 receptions, IN ONLY SEVEN GAMES. Metcalf has some serious potential and could be one of the best wide receivers, if not THE best out of this draft.
The Giants will definitely either take a quarterback at six or trade for one in someone such as Josh Rosen. This means that they will likely have another pick to go for either a wide receiver, offensive lineman or any of the gazillion other holes they need to fill.
Should D.K. Metcalf be available come the 17th overall pick, the Giants should definitely take a serious look at the Ole Miss wide receiver.
