Round One: Jonah  Williams, OT, Alabama

More from Empire Writes Back

Anyone who keeps up with my writing will not be surprised by this selection. I have eyeballed the offensive line in the draft all off-season.

The quarterback is in the fold. Finally, after all this time, the Jets have a quarterback to build around. It feels like a miracle, does it not?

Now they have to protect the investment. The Jets have to do everything in their power to make sure Sam Darnold is comfortable and safe.

The offensive line was not good in 2018. Especially if you look at the interior line play (G, C), it was bad.

It culminated in Spencer Long‘s inability to snap the football, and basically getting Darnold killed on an errant snap against the Miami Dolphins.

Remember this?

If the Jets don’t work to fix this problem immediately they will waste the best quarterback they have drafted in decades. It starts right here with Jonah Williams.

Everybody knows the quality of learning he has received under Nick Saban at Alabama. If anyone is ready to play at the NFL level, it’s an Alabama graduate.

Well, Dee Milliner might be the biggest exception.

Here is a link to check out some of his work.

The Draft Network gave a recent review of Williams, and provided a lot of praise. His biggest negative was his length, according to the staff. Unfortunately he can’t make himself longer, one is sort of given those traits.

If worse comes to worse he becomes a starter at guard. Maybe he even becomes a left tackle in a few years. He’s worth picking here.
