New York Jets: Three internal free agents the team can do without
Rontez Miles
Here is a guy that has always been a fan favorite with Jets fans. This player has flashed during training camp but has never really become anything of note during the season.
Rontez Miles has been around since 2013, joining the team as an undrafted free agent. He displayed decent speed, running a 4.62 at the NFL Combine. Not great, but decent. Miles has always been a hard worker and he could hit.
These facts have always endeared Miles to Jets fans. The team has always been the underdog, so therefore fans have always gravitated towards underdog players. Wayne Chrebet was the biggest example. Rontez Miles was just another example along those same lines.
The problem is, between injuries and lack of production, Miles has never lived up to the praise of the fans. He only played 16 games once, back in 2016. That year he posted 49 tackles and two forced fumbles as primarily a backup.
If those had been his numbers on a consistent basis, that would have been one thing. He never again posted more than 14 tackles in a season. Other than 2016, he never played more than 13 games.
Has Miles played well, when healthy, on special teams? Sure. But has he been that difference maker that makes him an absolute need to keep around? Absolutely not.
