New York Mets: 3 things to watch for this Spring Training
By Kyle Morello
Will the Mets carry 3 Catchers?
Travis d’Arnaud has been the Mets Opening Day starting catcher 3 out of the last 5 years, and the only who who is still on the team. That’s all about to change.
The Mets signed 2018 all-star Wilson Ramos, who will be the Mets primary Catcher when Opening Day rolls around.
They also have 24 year-old Tomas Nido on the active roster, and they also brought back Devin Mesoraco on a minor league deal with a spring training invite.
With Ramos leading the way and d’Arnaud penciled in as the backup, the Mets will certainly have depth at the Catcher position. But how far will they go with it?
While d’Arnaud has been injury plagued for most of his career, he should absolutely be on the roster. I doubt anyone would trade for him (barring an unforeseen injury for another team) and he still has some solid upside.
However, they shouldn’t have Nido or Mesoraco in the majors if both d’Arnaud and Ramos are healthy. The only reason they were in the majors last year was due to injury .
The Mets would be better off using the roster space for their surplus in the infield or adding an extra bullpen piece.
While it’s great the Mets have options for the first time in seemingly a long time, I do not think they will want to carry 3 Catchers this season.
