New York Giants: Nick Foles shouldn’t be Eli Manning’s replacement
By Alex Jordan
While the New York Giants are looking for a quarterback, Nick Foles has bought out his contract from the Philadelphia Eagles. So, Foles shouldn’t be Eli Manning’s successor.
The New York Giants might have a QB crisis on their hands, but that doesn’t mean they should go out and get someone like Nick Foles, who voided his 2019 contract option Tuesday night.
The Eagles notified Foles Tuesday night that they were exercising the $20 million option in his contract. Foles then informed the team that voiding the option and has paid the Eagles $2 million to buyout his contract, according to Tim McManus of ESPN.
The Eagles could still pit the franchise tag on Foles and they plan to do so, so that they can try to trade him. The Eagles have already committed to Carson Wentz being their starting quarterback moving forward.
The question now is where does Foles go? The New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, and Washington Redskins have the biggest need for a quarterback right now. However, ESPN’s Dan Graziano has predicted that Foles will go to the Jaguars.
While there is a good chance that Eli Manning will still be with the Giants next season, the Giants should be looking for Eli’s replacement right now. While who will be Manning’s replacement is anyone’s guess, Manning’s replacement shouldn’t be Foles.
If they Giants were interested in Foles, then it would cost them about the same, maybe more, to sign Foles as it would for keeping Eli. Last year, Foles led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl title.
This season, Foles completed 72 percent of his passes and threw for seven touchdowns as he led the Eagles to three straight regular season wins and a playoff win against the Chicago Bears.
Foles is a superb quarterback, but at 30 years old he might not be able to become a franchise quarterback, which is what the Giants truly need.
So, the best and most logical way of finding Manning’s successor is in the draft.
Sirius XM football analyst Greg McElroy told Paul Schwartz of the New York Post that he thinks the Giants have to find Manning’s successor in the draft:
"“I like the idea of Foles, I think he would be a great bridge quarterback. He’s shown the ability to play well if surrounded by a capable supporting cast. When he’s struggled was when he was with a group that didn’t have elite talent around him.”"
McElroy added:
"“Clearly the Giants have weapons. Also, knowing the offensive line for New York, it’s better, but it’s certainly not a position of strength. So maybe you’d have to get a guy who is a little more mobile. Foles is not overly mobile but probably more mobile than Eli is at this point in his career. I still think the franchise guy is going to have to come by way of the draft.”"
While Foles would be a solid temporary replacement for Eli Manning, he shouldn’t be Eli’s replacement at all. Manning’s successor need to be found in the draft and become the younger, newer face of the franchise.
