With ex-New York Knicks player Kristaps Porzingis headed to the Dallas in a trade, how will the Knicks be effected this year?

In case you have been living under a rock the last 24 hours, the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a deal that will send Kristaps Porzingis, among others, to the Dallas Mavericks with Dennis Smith jr. and a couple of others coming to New York.

But with the worst record in the NBA so far, how will this impact the Knicks for this year?

With a 10-40 record going into this weekend, the Knicks currently have the worst record in the NBA, and they just got even worse.

This being said, the Knicks are currently looking at a top three pick, and hopefully the first overall pick when the draft rolls around in June.

Although the Porzingis trade may look bad and keep the Knicks bad, this trade could help the Knicks secure that pick.

The 2019 Draft has several players that can change a franchise for the better and potentially getting a player such as Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett or Ja Morant may be worth becoming the laughing-stock of the league for a couple of months.

The Knicks received only Dennis Smith Jr., Deandre Jordan, and Wesley Matthews as well as 2021 and 2023 first round picks for Kristaps Porzingis, Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Courtney Lee.

Now, as I mentioned in my earlier article, this trade was most definitely in an effort to create cap space for 2019 free agency, and it has been reported that the Knicks plan on buying out newly acquired Deandre Jordan in an effort to do exactly that.

However, the trade does leave you thinking the Knicks most definitely could have gotten a better deal for Porzingis who was elected to the All-Star Game in only his third season.

Nonetheless it is over, and the trade has gone through and the Knicks must look to the remainder of the season for ways they can improve for the future.

The biggest way clearly being tanking for the draft.

With this trade, you can expect to see the Knicks youngsters, Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson and Allonzo Trier getting a lot more minutes to give them as much experience and exposure to the NBA as possible.

In doing so, you are losing more games and you are getting an even higher draft pick ahead of one of the most anticipated draft classes in recent memory.

The Knicks are in a dark place and there seems to be no clear path for the future, but everything the Knicks do from here to the end of the season needs to be in preparation of the 2019 NBA Draft.
