2017 Dolphins

The record went the wrong way in Gase’s second year. They finished third in the AFC East with a 6-10 record.

We cannot evaluate the development of Tannehill here because he missed the entire season due to injury.

So what did the Dolphins do? They brought Jay Cutler out of retirement. Gase had worked with Cutler while acting as his offensive coordinator in Chicago with the Bears.

The offense? Dropped all the way down to 27th in DVOA. They also fell to 25th in yards per game with 307.7. For those of you keeping score, that’s an overall result that is WAY WORSE than they were the previous year.

Cutler started 14 games, throwing for 19 touchdowns vs 14 interceptions. He completed 62% of his passes.

I ask you this, are those the numbers of a quarterback that excelled in Gase’s system? He did OK. But great? No, and certainly not evidence of a guy that is supposed to be an offensive genius.

Tannehill comes back in 2018, maybe it got better…
