New York Giants: Giants should trade Odell Beckham Jr. to 49ers for draft picks

If you are New York Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman, please realize it is plausible to trade Odell Beckham Jr. in a package deal for the second overall pick to the San Fransisco 49ers.

Odell Beckham Jr. has been the most polarizing New York Giants and New York sports figure in recent memory.

Ever since his unimaginable one-handed catch Sunday night five years ago, Beckham has risen to global stardom.

He has made the Giants relevant again since their last Super Bowl win, yet the Giants have not been a relevant playoff contender since his arrival.

Without focusing on Odell’s on-field antics and off-field drama, let’s take a dive into the real things people should be focusing on since Beckham has been around.

Since 2014, Beckham’s rookie year, the Giants have a record of 31-49. While making the playoffs in one season in 2016 and finishing in the bottom half of the division four of the five seasons.

During that time, however, Beckham has compiled mesmerizing statistical numbers with 390 receptions for 5476 yards and 44 touchdowns.

While missing almost all of the 2017 season, Beckham has truly put up superstar numbers.

During in the 2018 NFL draft, the Giants might not have realized they changed the face of their franchise from drama filled Beckham, to humble superstar Saquon Barkley.

After the bye week in 2018, the Giants offense seemed to have found their identity, and it wasn’t and offense surrounded around Beckham Jr.

The offense averaged around 27 points per game, while averaging 110 rushing yards behind a new-found commodity on the offensive line, an efficient Eli Manning, and Saquon Barkley.

In the first four games after the bye-week, before his quad injury, Beckham averaged only four receptions for a paltry average of 66 receiving yards.

In the final four weeks of the season, with an offensive cast of Barkley, Evan Engram, Sterling Shepard, a cast of Corey Coleman, and Cody Latimer, the offense was not the problem for the struggling Giants.

After the bye week was when the Giants were playing their best offensive football, yet all season it seemed that the Giants defense could not get it together.

The New York Giants could not stop anyone on defense for the life of them.

The Giants defense ranked 5th worst in total defense and tied for 2nd worst in sacks for the 2018 season.

Along with ranking in the top five in two of the most important defensive categories, their defense could not make a big stop to solidify a win.

Seven of the Giants’ 11 loses came by one score or less.

If you are a fan, and the Giants were up by a score, there was time left on the clock, and the opponent had the ball, you almost just assume the opponent would drive down the field and win the game.

So if you look a the Giants roster as a whole, they have way too many problems to be making Odell Beckham Jr. the highest paid wide receiver in football.

They cannot rush the passer, it seemed like their corner backs were either taking penalties or unable to stop anyone, their offensive line still needs improvements and most importantly, the New York Giants future at the quarterback position is completely unknown.

If you’re Dave Gettleman, you have the highest paid receiver in football, a roster that has many holes, a team that has missed the playoffs in six of the last seven seasons since winning the Super Bowl during the 2011 season.

Something has to got to give.

To reiterate, since your highest paid player has been on the team you inherited, the team has had a combined record of 31-49 and made the playoffs once.

So, is it time to move on from Odell Beckham Jr.?

This is all smoke in mirrors, but a possible trade candidate that could be the most intriguing for the Giants for Odell Beckham Jr. could be the San Fransisco 49ers who own the 2nd overall pick.

The San Fransisco 49ers, who have been rumored around Antonio Brown, seemed like they could never escape the injury bug.

With big names such as free agent acquisition Jerick McKinnon, face of the franchise Jimmy Garoppolo, and a plethora of offensive and defensive talent coming off injuries in 2019, the 49ers could be in win-now mode.

If Gettleman can offer the 49ers a younger top-tier receiver (instead of Brown who is four years older than Odell) with four more years on his deal in a package for the second overall pick, how could you not entertain the deal in your are John Lynch in San Fran?

The Giants can continue to stockpile draft picks, and can have so many options with the 2nd and 6th overall picks.

You can draft two of either a pass rusher, offensive line help, secondary help or possibly your future quarterback.

As for the 49ers, they will receive a top offensive weapon to go along with Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida, and George Kittle while they’re in win-now mode with Jimmy G.

The New York Giants offense seems to work without Beckham in Pat Shurmur’s offense.

By trading Beckham, you can continue to build your offense around your new face of your franchise in Saquon Barkley.
