New York Knicks: Kevin Durant should consider Knicks in free agency
By Alex Jordan
With Kevin Durant about to become a free agent, New York Knicks fans are hoping that he comes to New York. While he doesn’t seem interested in playing for the Knicks, he should consider them.
The New York Knicks need to spend money on a big-time free agent this season and Kevin Durant is one of those free agents some people could pencil as the guy the Knicks get.
To quote the movie Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come.”
New York Knicks fans are dreaming that Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant will come to New York.
Durant has a player option for the 2019-20 season but is expected to test free agency this summer.
The Knicks are planning to sign a top free agent this summer.
There is no question that the Knicks will go after Durant this summer but is he interested in playing for the Knicks?
Here’s what Durant said on Tuesday about whether the Knicks would be on his radar in free agency, per Marc Berman of the New York Post:
"“I have no clue where that stuff comes from. I just focus on playing ball every single day. I can’t control what people say about me, or what they say about our future and what I should do. I come to work every single day, and life will figure itself out.”"
It seems that Durant isn’t interested in the Knicks.
However, he should consider the Knicks when he becomes a free agent.
KD has ties to New York, his manager Rick Kleiman lives in New York, his father is a lifelong Knicks fan, and he is friends with Knicks assistant coach Royal Ivey.
Another reason Durant should consider the Knicks is because he’s friends with rookie Allonzo Trier and rookie Kevin Knox is a huge fan of Durant.
Knox told Marc Berman of the New York Post:
"“Ever since he was at Texas, I followed him through my whole life. It will be great to go on court, guard him and go against him. I followed him wherever he went. Wherever he went it was my favorite team.”"
Knox added, “It would be cool to learn, work out with him if I play with him and everything he can teach me, a guy that I’ve imaged my game after”
Knox aso said, “To be able to be around him 24/7, that’d be pretty cool, but I’m looking forward to playing against him.”
Knicks legend Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier told Sirius XM NBA Radio in August that Durant’s success with the Warriors would have a negative impact on his legacy (via ESPN).
"“Durant, I mean, as great a player as he is, I would still hold back because, man, he joined a team that really didn’t need him. You know what I mean?. He’s right there with LeBron, probably will surpass LeBron as the best player in the game soon. But for him doing that, I still don’t give him the full credit that he probably would have deserved if he stayed with [the Oklahoma City Thunder] and won a title with that team.”"
When asked about where he would rank Durant on a list of all-time great players, Frazier said that KD would be down the list and there would be an asterisk by his name.
On Tuesday, Frazier told Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News that he meant no disrespect and that winning a title with the Knicks would put Durant over the top when it comes to the NBA’s all-time greats.
"“I think that’s what he needs. Especially if the Warriors win this year, I think he’d be looking for a different challenge. I don’t know a better place than New York where he can do it. Where else could he go to get what he’s looking for, to be the best in the game? If he could bring a title to New York, that’s going to catapult him with Jordan and LeBron, I would think.”"
Durant is a great player and would be a great addition for the Knicks.
He would help the Knicks have winning seasons instead of losing seasons and could bring a title to New York.
Durant would be a great fit for the Knicks so he should consider them when he becomes a free agent.
We’ll just have to wait and see what Durant does when he becomes a free agent. Until then, keep dreaming Knicks fans.
