Flexibility

Flexibility can mean a lot of different things when it comes to job situations. But for the next coach coming in to lead the Jets, it means something very different.

The traditional power structure with a team is that the coach reports to the general manager, who reports to the owner. I know it’s not 100% but it is the favored way to go. That isn’t the case with the Jets.

Both the coach and the general manager report to the owner in the Jets organization. That can bring lots of problems.

When things go poorly, there is every chance that each guy is going to point fingers at the other. It’s human nature, they want to keep their jobs.

Maccagnan’s contract runs through 2020. A new coach will likely get a four-year contract that will go through 2022. They will definitely be on different timelines.

Will Maccagnan and the coach be on the same page? They have to be in order to put this organization together, otherwise this will be an arranged marriage that ends in a quick divorce.

How does the new coach feel about this situation? Can he work within it? Whomever they select will have to be extremely flexible. They will be able to glean this from the interview.

I’m excited to see how it plays out.
