The New York Islanders in 2018

Breakdown

Like many other New York Sports teams, the Islanders had a star rookie who carried them in 2018.

The New York Islanders had a very up and down year in 2018.

On one hand they saw some great things out of Mathew Barzal, Anders Lee and company, but on the other they lost a star in John Tavares.

The superstar for the New York Islanders has been John Tavares since they drafted him in 2009.

Unfortunately for the Islanders, Tavares decided to go home to Toronto and sign with the Maple Leafs, thus leaving the team he played for since 2009.

But as the saying goes, when one star dies another is born, and that is exactly what happened for the New York Islanders.

2018 brought us the rise to stardom for Mathew Barzal, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Barzal won the Calder Trophy as the 2017-18 NHL Rookie of the Year with his 22 goals and 63 assists for 85 points.

Barzal dazzled in 2017-18, and he is off to yet another great start in 2018-19.

In the first 37 games this season Barzal was responsible for 10 goal, 25 assists for 35 points on the season.

He is leading the Islanders and has helped them to a 20-13-4 record so far this year.

Should he keep it up, this is a guy who could win multiple Hart Trophy’s over the course of his career.

The Islanders have stepped up in a pretty big way surprising many after the loss of John Tavares, and they show some serious potential.

Just this past week against the Senators, the Islanders started out down 3-1 but stormed back and went on to win the game by a final score of 6-3.

All year, they’ve shown fight and they’ve shown that they never quit and they never back down, and that will get a team far into the season.

Best moment

So in a year of ups and downs what was the best moment of 2018?

The Islanders top moment of 2018 came on December 1st.

The Islanders were playing a rather meaningless regular season game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, but to Islanders fans it meant so much more.

Why you ask?

This game meant more because of where it was being played.

The Islanders were returning to Nassau Coliseum playing their first game on Long Island since they moved to Brooklyn back in 2015.

The game sold out and it was the most electric home game the Islanders have played in years, cause the ol’ barn was rocking once again.

Fans and players alike loved it and everyone was excited to play more games throughout the season on Long Island before moving to Belmont.
