New York Jets: Re-signing Quincy Enunwa is a smart move
By Alex Jordan
New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa signed a four-year contract extension. The re-signing is a good move for the Jets future.
The New York Jets gave wide receiver Quincy Enunwa a contract extension on Friday.
The deal is for four years and is worth up to $36 million and has $20 million guaranteed.
The Jets had been trying to re-sign Enunwa since early October. Enunwa is happy that he’s staying with the Jets and not becoming a free agent.
He told Eric Allen from the Jets website:
"“I knew when I got here that I wanted to be a Jet for a very long time. Now, I’ll get my opportunity and it feels really good.I’m excited for the future and for some more big plays. And I think there is a lot in store for us as a team.”"
Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said in a statement, via ESPN:
"“Quincy is a key part of our foundation, and we are thrilled that this contract will keep him here for years to come.”"
This season Enunwa had 38 catches for 449 yards and a touchdown in 11 games.
He hasn’t played the last two games because of an ankle injury and won’t play in the season finale against the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Re-signing Enunwa is a smart move by the Jets.
He is one of the Jets top receivers along with Robby Anderson. This season he lead the team in receiving yards five times.
Since being selected by Gang Green in the 2014 draft Enunwa has 118 receptions, 1,621 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.
Enunwa is a good player and losing him would have been a huge loss for the Jets.
Another reason this is a smart move is Sam Darnold.
Darnold hasn’t had many weapons in his rookie season. Quincy will be one weapon for Darnold but he needs more.
Enunwa thinks that he can mold Darnold.
He told reporters in the Jets locker room, per Greg Joyce of the New York Post:
"“I’ll make the joke: I have a young quarterback I can mold. No, but seriously, I think Sam is an amazing player. As a receiver, that’s who you want to play with. We have so much talent around at every position. I’ve been here for so long, this is what I know, and this is what I’ve come to love. I want to continue growing with this team.”"
Darnold has been good in his rookie season, but he can get better.
Maybe Enunwa could help Darnold get better.
While the Jets won’t be in the playoffs this year, their future is bright with Sam Darnold and Quincy Enunwa.
